Safe And Stylish: How To Safely Rock Your Fabric Face Masks and WHY They Are Important!

3 min read

Here’s the deal.

Wearing a face mask when out in public is probably the most selfless thing that you can do right now. With COVID-19 sweeping the globe and all of us under quarantine as we wait for this virus to pass, we’re all aware of the most vulnerable people in our families and communities. Our grandparents. The neighbour down the street battling cancer. Your tiny newborn niece. These are all the people that we are protecting when we take the initiative and wear a face mask out in public.

To be as safe as possible, here are a few things you should know about how to wear and wash your masks:

WILL WEARING A MASK KEEP ME FROM GETTING THE VIRUS?

The TLDR answer? No.

A face mask or covering is to prevent carriers or those who are sick from SPREADING the virus.

In the glorious words of our leader, Mr. Justin Trudeau - “[A mask] protects others more than it protects you. It prevents you from breathing or speaking moistly on them.”

We’ll give you a minute to just let that process.

While the image is cringeworthy and the idea of anything moist sends a shiver up our spines, it’s actually a very good description. Wearing a mask of any kind will prevent the virus from being transmitted in airborne particles as you breathe, talk, and cough out in public. Even if you are NOT sick, and are showing NO symptoms, it is recommended that wearing a mask is still effective as there is a possibility that you could be COVID-19 positive and asymptomatic (a.k.a. not showing any signs).

SO WHO GETS TO ROCK THIS STYLISH ACCESSORY?

Everyone! Well, mostly. If you are under the age of 2 (and reading this blog?! Child prodigy alert!), or are unable to remove the mask on your own for any reason, you, unfortunately, don’t get to be invited to this super cool club. Please be safe and responsible about who wears masks in your home! For those who are in the vulnerable or at-risk group, the best option is to stay home.

GIVE ME THE WASHING DEETS.

Wash routines are something of our specialty over here at Lil Helper, and the care routine for your face masks is no exception. Imagine our disappointment when we learned it was as simple as washing your regular laundry.

As recommended by the CDC, a regular washing cycle with your normal detergent should be satisfactory for sanitizing them after use. For drying, laying flat is best so as to preserve the elastic sides.

SO... I WEAR A MASK AND EVERYTHING IS GUCCI?

Wearing a mask isn’t the quick fix for the COVID-19 virus, but it is a huge piece of the puzzle. In conjunction with CDC recommendations on social distancing (remaining at minimum 2 meters/6 feet from others) and hand washing, we can all work together to flatten the curve of the virus and help keep our family, friends, neighbours, and country safe and healthy.
